History

  • We believe that a high-quality history education can bring pupils into a rich dialogue with the past andwith the traditions of historical enquiry.

  • Through our history curriculum, we aim for our pupils to develop a rich understand of their place in theworld, and in the long story of human development. We know that history helps pupils to understand thecomplexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships betweendifferent groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time. With this in mind, pupilslearn how the past, and changing accounts of the past, have shaped the identities of diverse people, groups and nations.

  • Our history curriculum allows pupil to understand methods of historical enquiry and is designed to inspirepupils’ curiosity to know more about the past. As pupils progress through the curriculum, they learn howhistorians and others construct accounts about the past, building on and challenging or refining the workof others. Pupils learn how argument and debate can be underpinned by shared principles of enquiry, andhow this can drive and test new knowledge and insight about shared pasts. Teaching will equip pupils toask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective andjudgement.

History Overview

Key Concepts

These concepts provide a frame for the learning within units of work and have influenced what units have been included or excluded from the curriculum. The 4 concepts are:

Trade and settlements: this is about understanding who lives in the community and what they do; understanding how people and events have influenced settlements and communities as well as how trade has affected where and how people live. This concept spans all key stages.

The second is empire and civilisation. Through this concept pupils develop their understanding of the similarities and differences in empires and civilisations across the word and how life was different for different people living in these. This concept is studied throughout Key Stage 2.

The 3rd is invasion, migration and peace. Through this concept pupils learn about why people choose to live where they do including why they move. They also look at the impact of migration on the British Isles over time. This concept is covered in each Key Stage.

The final concept is technology and invasion. Through this concept pupils learn about the evolution of communication, transport and the impact of significant individuals on the world. This concept is the focus for many units in Key stage 1.
